Manchester Cathedral

Total Reuse CIC are working in partnership with Manchester Cathedral to divert some of the tiles that are being removed from the nave of the church.

"In October 2009, the Bishop of Manchester launched a fundraising campaign to raise funds to replace our under-floor heating system, build a new organ, introduce a new lighting scheme and restore some of the fabric as part of the Manchester Cathedral Development Project. Since this date, Manchester Cathedral has been raising the funds to undertake these projects, the first of which will be to replace the under floor heating system at a cost of £2,344,000. The current under-floor heating system dates in part from the post-war rebuilding era of the 1950s. The current heating output now is some 15% of the levels available since the 1950’s as a result, the recent extremely cold winters have embarrassed the Cathedral as temperatures were unacceptably low. As Manchester Cathedral has the widest nave in the country, it takes a lot to heat this building. This dusty and mucky work needs to be completed before the installation of our new organ.

We have received a lot of expressions of interest from members of the congregation and visitors asking about the current flooring and what will happen to it. I am pleased to be able to confirm that a percentage of the tiles will now be diverted to a local social enterprise based in Skelmersdale where they will be cleaned and polished and made available via on-line sales. Several different tiles will be salvaged and turned into a variety of products aimed at encouraging people to sit at the dining table. Coasters, platters, hot plates and cheese boards are some of the potential products.

To gauge demand, and to secure an adequate supply of tiles, expressions of interest are invited from individuals and/or organisations who would like a piece of the holy floor as a keep-sake, conscious that the floor of this medieval church has witnessed countless generations in prayer and worship".

Anthony O'Connor - Director of Fundraising and Development
